As the weather turns chilly, it’s time for a Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe. Hot chocolate bombs are all the rage right now and are so fun to make. The chocolate ball shell is filled with miniature marshmallows and hot cocoa mix. When the hot milk is poured over it, the delicious flavors mix into your favorite cozy drink.

Supplies Needed:

Most items needed to make a hot chocolate bomb, are already in your pantry. Powdered hot cocoa mix, miniature marshmallows, and chocolate chips. The only unusual item would be a silicone baking mold for 1-3 inch balls. You can find these on Amazon or at your local baking supply store. Click Here for silicone mold link

Limited Quantity:

Because of the popularity, many molds are sold out and on back order until after the holidays. Don’t give up, you can get creative with bath bomb kit molds or even whiskey ice ball makers. Yes, that is what I used for my first attempt at a hot chocolate bomb, and I promise our drink is way better than whiskey. Although these options work, know that they may not be a perfect round ball. Hey, perfection is over rated!

Melt Chocolate:

Melt the chocolate stirring continuously until smooth and pourable. This can be done on the stovetop or in a microwave. If using a microwave, melt in a glass bowl for 20 seconds then stir before melting again. It should not take more than 2 minutes total. Do not overcook.

Fill The Mold:

Spoon chocolate into the mold and use the back of a spoon or a pastry brush to push the melted chocolate around the mold, make sure it is thick enough on the sides and edges. Place the molds into the freezer for 10 minutes to harden. To remove the chocolate from the molds gently push the chocolate half spheres out of the silicone mold and place on a cold plate. Give your self some grace the first time, if they break. I finally got the hang of it, and used a butter knife to loosen the top of the mold.

Perfection Is Over Rated:

Again, remember that you’re dealing with chocolate and a mold. It will turn out imperfectly perfect. You will be covering most of the hot chocolate bomb outside with additional elements, so you wont be able to see any imperfections. Of course it will be delicious.

Melt Edges & Fill:

Warm an empty plate on your stove top or microwave, just hot enough to melt the chocolate edge. Pick up the empty half of the chocolate bomb and place it on the warm plate for a couple of seconds, just until it softens and melts. Turn it back over and add 1 tablespoon hot cocoa powder and mini marshmallows to half of the spheres. Pick up another half and melt the edge on the warm plate then push the two sides together to seal. This will join the two domes together into a sphere. Hold until sealed.

Embellish The Outside:

Drizzle extra chocolate, candy cane sprinkles or salted caramel on the top. When ready to serve, place in a mug and pour hot milk over the top. We love to stir it with a candy cane. Enjoy!
